Vision Aid
Overseas
WHO ARE WE?
Vision Aid Overseas is a charity dedicated to helping
people in need in developing countries whose lives
are blighted by poor eyesight particularly in those
cases where spectacles can help. Started in 1985, it
works by sending abroad teams of volunteer optometrists
and dispensing opticians to set up clinics, screen
large numbers of patients and provide the appropriate
spectacles where necessary.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
VAO is the only UK-based charity exclusively committed
to dealing with ‘refractive error’. This
is a condition where light is not focused correctly
on the back of the eye resulting in blurred vision.
Spectacles are normally the solution. But, owing to
poverty and lack of skilled opticians, spectacles are
not available to millions of people in the developing
world who desperately need them.
